In India, there are several engineering institutes and colleges offering graduate and undergraduate programs in engineering and science. The technical and engineering institutes and universities in India are acclaimed for the global standards they maintain.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)

AICTE is a statutory body at the national level for technical education under the Department of higher education. It is responsible for proper planning and coordinated development of technical education and management system in India. It accredits graduate and postgraduate programs under specific categories. National Board of Accreditation (NBA) with authority to recognize institutions and programs in accordance with the norms and standards set by AITCE. AICTE aims to develop high quality institutions, making technical education in India globally acceptable. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

IITs are autonomous public engineering and management institutes in India and are institutes of national importance. There are sixteen IITs located in different states in India. Though they are independent institutes, the IIT Council overseas their administration. They are considered to be the most prestigious centres of engineering education. The admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programs are through entrance examination.

India institute of Information Technology (IIITs)

Established by the central government to promote information technology, the India Institutes of Information Technology are a group of four institutions. They are located in Gwalior, Allahabad, JabalPur and Kancheepuram.

National Institutes of technology (NITs)

NITs are premier engineering colleges in India. These institutes were once called Regional Engineering Colleges. Now there are 30 NITs across the country. The admission to NITs is though entrance examination.

The institute of Engineers ( India)

The Institute of Engineers is the national organization for engineers in India. It pioneers non-formal education in engineering. It conducts examination for awarding its Associate Membership (AMIE) Membership designations given by Institute of Engineers.

Polytechnic Institutes

Most of the engineering colleges in India are under the control of the state governments. At the state level it is impossible to compare engineering colleges in one state with those in another. Eligibility for engineering courses

Candidates wishing to apply for diploma course in engineering must pass the secondary level examination (Grade-10). Admission is based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination. For undergraduate course, the candidate has to take an entrance test at the national or state level after completing the senior secondary level education with maths physics and chemistry as the optional subjects. Diploma-holders can get direct admission to the second year of undergraduate engineering course.
